Migraine cannot be completely eradicated, but its pain can be reduced with proper medicine use. Apart from medicines, some techniques help reduce migraine pain to a limited extent. Acupressure has also been found beneficial in reducing headaches in some migraine patients. Although its usefulness in acute migraine attacks is limited, it is still capable of reducing migraine pain to some extent. Both acupressure and acupuncture have their roots in ancient Chinese medicine and have been practiced for decades.
What is Migraine?
Before understanding the relationship between acupressure and migraine, let us define migraine. Migraine is a neurological condition characterized by a headache on one side of the head accompanied by nausea or vomiting. Patients may also be sensitive to light and sound. Due to these symptoms, migraine patients are unable to do daily work.
Acupressure and Migraine
Acupressure therapy is a helpful therapy that helps reduce the pain of migraine patients to some extent. Under this therapy, specific pain points are activated, which activates the nerves and tries to release pain-relieving substances called endorphins, which reduce headaches. Many studies have shown that using pressure in chronic migraine patients reduces headaches and is also beneficial. Apart from this, such patients also get good sleep.
Ear pressure points
There are two pressure points on the ear where migraine patients can get relief through acupressure.
Tragus (ear gate) : Acupressure at this point helps reduce headache and jaw pain.
Helix (top of the ear) : Applying acupressure on the helix can bring significant relief to migraine patients, offering a much-needed respite from the debilitating symptoms.
Hand pressure points
At the base of the thumb and index finger: Applying acupressure on the point located at the base of the thumb and index finger of the hand helps in reducing migraine pain.
Facial pressure points
Middle of the forehead: Applying acupressure on the point in the middle of the forehead reduces migraine pain.
Between the eyebrows: Applying acupressure on the point between the eyebrows has also been found beneficial in migraine pain.
Acupressure on the above-mentioned points has been found to be beneficial to some extent in chronic migraine patients. In contrast, it is not as effective in acute migraine patients. In acute cases, migraine patients are advised to consult the nearest doctor and get themselves treated. This blog post has been written for the information of migraine patients so that they can better assess their problems and get themselves treated. The benefit of acupressure is completely individual, as it works in some patients and does not work at all in some patients.
